Fibre Optic Cable
A fibre-optic cable, sometimes called an optical Fibre Optic Cable, is an assemble like an electric cable, but with one or more fibre-optic fibers which are employed to transmit light. The light transmitted by the fiber-optic cables is a type of electromagnetic radiation and therefore it carries information in the form of photons. The information carried by the light is termed as the frequency content, which depends on the wavelength at which the light is transmitted. Normally, fibre-optic cables are employed for both data and voice communication systems, but they are also widely used for connecting hardware components such as sensors, relays and telephones. In addition, fiber-optic cables are also used for application areas where high bandwidth and reliability are required. For instance, fiber-optic systems are extensively used in telecommunication and television industries.
An optical fibre-optic cable consists of a series of glass threads, which are suspended in a fluid. The threads are made of a single glass filament, which is made of a highly conductive substance. A small hole or an opening is first punched through the centre of the threads in order to allow light to pass through. The threads are then fastened into a plastic sleeve which is covered by an insulating layer which has a low density. The plastic covering prevents radio frequency interference and allows the light to transmit freely.
Like any other Fibre Optic Cable, a multimode fibre optic cable has three levels of transmission; single mode, multimeter and optical fiber optic cable. As for the single mode, it uses a single fiber optic cable for transmission to the multimeter use a series of single mode fibres of the same length for data transmissions. The optical fibre cable enables fast data transmission at higher speeds. The major advantages of this technology over traditional methods are: it offers a competitive edge with greater capacity over conventional systems, the ability to operate in any environment, easy handling and low maintenance, better and more reliable handling of signal and increased bandwidth.
